2015 Year in Review

It’s been another wonderful year for Dreams for Orphans, our sponsored children, our supporters, and the communities we serve. Each year we continue to give hope to Africa’s most vulnerable orphans through educational opportunities and building safe environments. In 2015 we made great progress on current projects and continued to extend our reach in Accra, Ghana.10983361_10153404909544494_6029525115355016386_n

Education: School sponsorships

We believe that education is the key to success. It’s a gift no one can take away. Dreams for Orphans currently sponsors 19 orphans ranging from 5-22 years old, including a university student and a nursing student in their final stages of school. The educational opportunities we provide through our sponsorships not only help to eradicate the cycle of poverty in these orphans’ futures, but also for their entire communities. Education levels have a direct correlation with life expectancy and health. According to the EFA Global Monitoring Report, for every $1 USD invested in education, approximately $10-15 USD would be generated in economic growth. If you are interested in sponsoring a child, please contact Kary Doerfler at kary@dreamsfororphans.org.11986355_10153585806994494_8700149245593107609_n

Safe environments: Pediatric Care Unit11059498_10153366340259494_4383913476890253482_o

New facilities are desperately needed in the communities we serve in Accra, Ghana. We began fundraising in 2010 for our Pediatric Care Unit, a facility that will provide a safety net for the most vulnerable orphaned infants. It will help prevent the continued onset of orphaned infants and children caused by poverty and a lack of healthcare. This sustainable unit not only addresses the community’s lack of access to healthcare, but also the underlying social causes and results of this type of infrastructure. Dreams for Orphans has donated half of the funds needed to complete this project so far. $70,000 is needed to complete the aboveground structure including a concrete roof for a future second floor, and $65,000 is needed for the inside details such as windows, surfaces, paving, electrical and plumbing. With your help, we can complete this project in 2016 and begin saving lives.

Thank you to all our donors and supporters, we are excited to see what the New Year will bring!

About the Author
My 24 years as a flight attendant have enabled me to travel and see much of the world. When I started going to Africa my passion was born to help the less fortunate and show my own 3 children this imbalance. I wanted them to know they had a responsibility to others as they grow up in a world that most things are readily accessible to them and are not to most the world. It is easy to fall in love with children in Africa. It is more difficult to find appropriate ways to help. Education was by far the first tool we knew could be powerful and effective. Combining this with improved environment, enables them to grow and thrive with food, shelter, medical care and most of all love.I travel to Ghana as a flight attendant monthly and enjoy taking my children on working trips as well as our own vacation time. Being on the ground making sure the DFO funds are carefully dispatched is rewarding and I am compensated by their huge smiles and hugs every time I visit. Seven years have gone by so fast and I cannot imagine my life without DFO and all the children. As Dreams continues to grow I relish the fact that the number of orphans we are helping is increasing. We are able to expand to more orphanages and provide education and safe environments to those orphans who deserve a rich and happy life.
